Sightings report image

Date: 04/21/2014

Number: 1

What a wonder to see this tiger of a monarch caterpillar munching contentedly! Today was a cloudy to overcast day in the high 70's. It felt very comfortable with a gentle breeze. I took a look at some of the milkweed in the pastures and found larva of every stage from newborn to a couple of large 5th instars. I am still seeing egg-laying occurring, though not as frequently as in the weeks past. There are also spiders and bugs on the milkweed, some seeming to coexist with the larvae -- others are likely predators for them. Thank goodness this fellow in the photo managed to avoid all the dangers!
