A very windy morning with bright sunlight and a temperature around 75 degrees F. I saw a male monarch nectaring on the flowers of prairie plantains (Cacalia plantaginea) that are growing abundantly in the pastures and just now starting to bloom. These are 3 foot tall plants with spreading stems at the top giving way to tiny flowers. This long-journeyed and enduring monarch had faded and worn wings (even a tiny hole in one of them). He was very consistent in his choice of nectar this morning, going from one lofty prairie plantain to the next.
