A beautiful sunny warm day around 80 degrees F with light breezes. It was about 11am and I was walking around the yard and pastures seeing several monarchs flying and egg-laying. One particular female caught my attention as she was fluttering a lot around one milkweed plant. I thought she was laying eggs on it, though spending a lot more time than usual. Well, when she left to go to another milkweed I found what had been fascinating her -- a large 5th instar caterpillar was munching on an underside leaf. What a wonderful surprise! The photo shows her peering down toward what is a mostly hidden monarch caterpillar. She also seemed very bright-winged (maybe a recently-born herself) -- and certainly bright and curious!
