Monarch (OTHER Observations)
Sightings report image

Date: 04/23/2014

Number: 1

Here is a 5th instar monarch caterpillar munching happily on a milkweed leaf. He has nibbled a notch in the petiole of the leaf. This causes the leaf to hang vertically, which stems the flow of milky sap called latex into the leaf, protecting the caterpillar's mouth from damage. He's pretty smart, as well as good-looking!
