This is a large 5th instar monarch caterpillar who I have been able to keep track of since he (or she) was a 2nd instar. This caterpillar lives on three tall "skyscraper" Asclepias viridis milkweed plants -- each over 25 inches tall! Truly this is a lucky caterpillar and I am glad that he (or she) has thrived so far. Soon to be changing into a chrysalis!
