Oriole (1st Baltimore)

Date: 05/06/2014

Number: 1

At 5:30 A.M. I spotted ONE MATURE adult male Oriole AND FIVE males which appeared to be last summer's fledglings--at my new combo jelly/nectar Oriole feeder in the backyard in Madison WI.
They were singing and calling before and during the feeding.
But, to my great disappointment, they then "moved On" to a more preferred location for mating and nesting.
Normally, at the Lake Poygan properties 100 miles NE of Madison, I have been feeding seven two-cup jelly feeders and five nectar feeders per week--and have between 3-4 pairs of BALTIMORE and ONE pair of ORCHARD ORIOLES feeding and nesting near the Lake Poygan property. During most years, the Baltimores fledge 3-4 young per pair; but the cold wet summer last year was deadly both to the Orioles and Martins. When Martin houses were cleaned last fall, three nests revealed 9 nestlings had died--and the Orioles fledged a new-low- total of three young among the 3-4 pairs.
