One very fresh Monarch checking out a large milkweed patch. I was quite surprised to see this specimen too. I'm a naturalist with our local park system and am pretty familiar with early season butterflies. I garden with my binoculars nearby and can confirm, without a doubt this was a very fresh female monarch.
My husband and I have looked for eggs and have yet to find any. Ours is a pretty large stand of common milkweed and dogbane and we haven't been able to look over every leaf.
