I was out at Belmont Prairie (Illinois Dedicated Nature Preserve) on Saturday (5/17) and observed milkweed - probably syriaca - several inches high. It's popping up in my yard now, leaves still furled tight. My whorled MW is several inches tall too. Saw my first native butterfly - a painted lady - Sunday at West Chicago Prairie. No monarchs yet. Will keep an eye out for eggs. Last year I found eggs but didn't see any monarchs at my waystation.
