Sightings report image

Date: 05/23/2014

Number: 1

Friday May 23, 2014, yesterday, I went out to take pictures of the yellow headed blackbirds in our pasture. They of course took flight and I was left looking for another subject to photograph. There in the raspberry bushes landed a hummingbird. It was 4:27 p.m., I snapped a couple shots and he flew. Thinking to move on I was surprised to find he had returned to the same 10' radius in the raspberries. I moved behind a post and got more pics. Again he flew, and again he returned. More pics. There are not yet flowers on the raspberries and he was landing on the dry stems from last year, this I have yet to figure out. He and I enjoyed this little game for some time then I had to leave for what was close to an hour. When I looked from my kitchen window I saw he was still there, so I spent more time with him and got more pictures. Evening turned to dusk and I had to give it up. This morning, much to my surprise he was still there, so I indulged in more photographs. Throughout the day I have returned several times. I watch from my window and he continues to take flight, but not far, and return again and again. It is now better than 24 hrs. and he is still there. He is, in the right light, a beautiful iridescent green with an iridescent ruby throat. Your map does not show him anywhere close to here. So why is he here?
