The 5mm-long larva was on the growing tip of an approximately 40-cm tall Asclepias syriaca (common milkweed)shoot in the native prairie planting in my backyard. I observed evidence of caterpillar feeding (C-shaped holes in upper leaves) on a few other shoots but no other larvae. In past years, we have noticed that few larvae in our plantings survive predation.
