Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/06/2014

Number: 1

The monarch was in flight, and yes, absolutely sure it was a monarch! We are working on a citizen science project through Cal Poly, and we tag monarchs that we see in Reno, NV every summer, so we know the different black and orange butterflies : ). My daughter's teacher says she saw a monarch a couple weeks ago not far from our school, too.

Lily and her science teacher are working on building a butterfly garden at the school that will include milkweed. There is only one species that seems to survive our harsh winters, Showy Milkweed, Asclepias speciosa, so that is what we are planting. We're trying to grow it from seed (because I heard anything you buy at a nursery has pesticides!) but it's slow going. There are a few patches in town, so we may just dig a little bit up and transplant it.

Another scientist in the area said they saw monarch larvae on milkweed in South Lake Tahoe last summer during a butterfly count.
