Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/14/2014

Number: 1

This is a brief synopsis of our annual survey at Newport State Park, near Ephraim in Door County, Wisconsin conducted on Saturday, June 14, 2014 (Susan Borkin & Julie Hein Frank surveyed).

No monarchs were sighted en route to the park. A total of just three adults (possibly more – 7 sightings in total) were observed between 11:30 am and 4 pm. All appeared to be in fresh condition and at least one was confirmed to be a female (none collected).

Weather conditions were partly cloudy, 54-66 F with occasional cool lake breezes. Asclepias syriaca plants were surveyed at 2 different sites within the park: 31 monarch eggs and 1 first instar larva were found on 100 plants (average height 36cm, 12% with small buds visible) and one egg was found on 19 plants (average height 26cm, most with top kill presumably from a late frost) in another location. Degree day accumulations were higher than 30 year average and lilac, honeysuckle and other nectar plants were in full bloom.
