Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/22/2014

Number: 1

Seven or Eight years ago when I was a classroom teacher I participated in the Journey North Monarch migration projects. We always were able to find abundant monarch caterpillars to teach the life cycle. Then it got harder to find them.

Several years ago at the urging of myself and some others, our town started to preserve meadow land for milkweed in several locations on conservation land. But we have not seen Monarchs. Last year I saw one where I used to see dozens. I am out at one of the conservation sites daily walking my dog and tending my garden in the community garden there. This year I have seen no Monarchs at all and no cabbage butterflies either (which is good for my garden but a little strange).

Something has definitely happened to halt the progression of Monarchs to the northeast. I assume it has to do with lost of habitat at some critical juncture. There is still time to produce several generations of butterflies if some should arrive. The milkweed is growing beautifully and is ready to receive them.
