One 4th instar monarch caterpillar was sighted in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains roughly 50 miles east of Sacramento, Calif. on July 6, 2014 on Asclepias cordifolia milkweed plants that were growing in a small oak and pine tree filled meadow at 2,084 feet elevation near the intersection of Omo Ranch Rd and Mt.Aukum Rd south of the town of Somerset, Calif.
