No monarch adults or caterpillars were seen at a rather large stand of Asclepias speciosa milkweed in the Sierra Nevada foothills about 50 miles east of Sacramento, Calif. on July 6, 2014 that was growing in a road ditch located at the intersection of Moonracer Rd and Grizzly Flat Road in Somerset, Calif. Lat: 38.641892 Long: -120.662423 Elevation: 2,440 feet. Based on past experiences at this spot I think this could mean the size of the monarch breeding population in this region (Sacramento, Calif. and adjacent foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains is now below normal even though it was normal in May and June. 2 minute video:
