While monitoring milkweed thickets at the Grand Canyon one large, brilliant colored female monarch flew in and began laying eggs on Asclepias subverticillata. The next day a male with good color but a ripped wing was spotted nectaring on a thistle. No other monarchs spotted on the South Rim in a four day visit. No monarchs spotted on the South Kaibab trail, Tonto trail or South Bright Angel trail.
