Observations reported by Kip Kiphart, Boerne, TX:
On July 10th during NABA 4th of July Butterfly Count, a monarch butterfly was observed at Guadalupe River State Park (Spring Branch, TX). We were unable to determine the sex but the butterfly appear fresh, probably a Gen3.
During the last week of June, I was seeing a very faded, tattered male patrolling my butterfly garden.
At any given time, I have 2 to 3 dozen queens nectaring primarily on Gregg's blue mist (Eupatorium greggii).
Interestingly I had not found a queen egg on the two A. curassavica in the garden or in my MLMP milkweed patch, some 30 A. asperula, about 150 feet away..................until July 11th when I found one egg with monitoring.
The Central Flyway of Texas turned out very, very few Gen1 butterfly despite an over-abundance of milkweed.
