Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/19/2014

Number: 1

I had some random thoughts on a bike ride this morning. I saw a single Monarch adult going across an open field. I got to wondering where is this butterfly going to get its next meal? So as I traveled down the road I looked at farm yards to find blooming flowers. I was somewhat shocked by how few I could find. Many farms are pristine looking with no flowers in their yard. The irony is that a short distance from where I was riding is the Dyck Arboretum of Hesston, Kansas. They have a twice a year native plant sale and hold classes on landscaping with native plants. Their mission is to educate people about Kansas native plants. A number of plants that I have near my house are from the sales. If anyone is ever near Hesston the arboretum is worth a stop! Also check them out on the web.
