Sightings report image

Date: 07/20/2014

Number: 1

update:
monarch numbers, dispersal, and stages all continue to look good here.
the first hatch of the north in early july has resulted in dozens of monarchs in the immediate area.
milkweed is 75% full bloom or past peak, but lots of new plants are growing and 10-20% are just budding.
I have spotted female(s) each of the last few days laying eggs; earlier eggs have now hatched and are in stage1 or stage2.
two chrysalis hatched here the last two days and I saw two 5th instar caterpillars about 3 daysago........not many middle stage caterpillars that I know of........
very few wasps, but quite a few ants now on some of the milkweed
fritillaries are numerous, too, but haven't seen many swallowtales lately.....and only a couple of viceroys so far this year.......
male monarchs are especially active.....there are usually 2-3 in our yard/garden and more on our back hills
less rain lately, but things are still green......short hot spell for a day or two and then cooler days next week......
rating for the year to this point: A-
