The caterpillar came home on a bouquet of flowers. we found some milkweed to feed it. It hatched from the chrysalis yesterday (7/21/14). New Seasons Market in our neighborhood in Portland. It was on a milkweed flower in the bouquet. We went out and bought some more to feed it, and I was able to find a couple of native milkweed plants at The Portland Nursery which we planted in the yard. The butterfly hung out in our yard overnight (it rained pretty hard). It is not in the yard this afternoon (7/22/14). I'm hoping it has flown off to find another! There are quite a few households in the neighborhood who have planted habitat gardens...
