Robin (First SEEN)

Date: 07/28/2014

Number: 17

I have lived at my residence for 4 yrs now. New house. Still working on the lawn and gardens. I have a lot. I also have a lily pond, built in with gardens around it. I have always seen a few robins, but they didn't seem much interested. In April this year, I put my potted plants out on the pation where the pond is. One is a bay leaf tree about 5 ft tall. The very next day a robin started her nest in the center of the tree. The branches are very close and do provide some shelter. But it's only 3 and a half feet off the ground. The tree is right next to a window, so I and my cats (indoor cats only) had loads of entertainment watching the whole process. She hatched 4 eggs. Then either she or another robin built its nest in my standard Japanese willow next to the pond.Again only 4 and a half feet off the ground. Hatched 3 eggs. Now this past week she or another has built her nest on a narrow ledge over my dining room window next to my front porch. I have been swooped so many times while working in the gardens next to the nest sites. I get a kick out of it. But why is she or they building their nests so close to the ground and human activity. And there are so many of them this year. I love them and welcome them. Can you enlighten me on this year's inrcease and closeness
