Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 07/30/2014

Number: 1

Finally! Monarch eggs and cats in northern New Jersey. Temps in the low 80's F during the day and going down to the unusually high 50's F at night. While watering the gardens this afternoon I noticed holes chewed in the leaves of my swamp milkweed. I bent the stem of the plant to look underneath and much to my surprise there was a 1st instar underneath. Then I noticed another and then another. I also have a flat of tropical milkweed about a foot away that I haven't had time to transplant yet and noticed holes in those leaves as well. I proceeded to go from plant to plant turning them upside down and then searched the other 3 flats which desperately need to be transplanted and eventually found 32 1st instars and 28 eggs. Some of the leaves had 3 to 4 eggs each on them. When I had that female Monarch here last week she never showed interest in the milkweed, at least when I was looking, but I guess when I turned away she got busy in the milkweed. I'll keep checking over the next few days to see if I find any more.
