No monarch adults or caterpillars were seen in the vicinity of a large field of Asclepias eriocarpa milkweed plants that were growing at the intersection of Florence Ln and Hwy 49 (Lat./Long.: 38.978391, -121.107703) slightly north of Auburn, Calif. on Aug. 2 2014. These observations compliment my other July observations in the region that the size of the monarch breeding population in the northern San Joaquin Valley, southern Sacramento Valley and adjacent foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains is far below normal for the months of July and early August.
