Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 07/22/2014

Number: 1

After there was no migration from Point Pele, last fall and I only live about 15 miles from there, I made up my mind that I would devote a great deal of time trying to spread the word and find ways to help, the Monarch. So my great grandson Mike and I started milk weed seed, in the house and transplanted them in the spring, down by our pond and I forbid anyone to use any type of pesticide around our property. Lo and behold on July 22, we saw just one Monarch flying around our two plants of Swamp Milkweed, we looked and found several eggs and Mike found two large larva, over the next week we collected 20 eggs and as of yesterday, all have hatched, we also found 4 more larva, of various sizes, making a total of 6, 5 of these larva are now chrysalis and as I write, #6 is just attaching itself to the roof of the terrarium. All in all, over the next 3 weeks I hope to be releasing 26 adult monarchs, at Point Pele Provincial Park. I feel so in awe, of what we accomplished, (100% survival rate, so far) and just think, if one old grandma, one 10 year old boy, 2 swamp milkweed, one $10 book, on how to raise monarchs, one pair of monarchs and NO PESTICIDE, can do this, imagine what a town could do. Come on Wheatley and Leamington, lets get back the Migration.
