Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 08/03/2014

Number: 7

I'm seeing a number of caterpillars that reach third instar and then disappear. I don't know if it's because the number of predators is increasing too, or what. The monarchs favor a smaller, newer patch of swamp milkweed that I have for laying eggs. I moved a couple monarchs to my larger (mostly untouched) patch in case predators are noting the chewed leaves. We'll see if they make it or not.

The first months of summer were incredibly successful, so it's hard to see the survival rates going down at this critical time.

One chrysalis showed up on the siding next to my front door!
