Single hummer feeding all around the house on salvia guaranitica and cardinal flower. At one point today, I was staking up the cardinal flower which tends to flop down. I heard a humming sound, stood still, and the hummer fed on the cardinal flower with an arm's reach of me. How great is that! Made all my work of ordering the plants, fixing the soil, plantIng the plants, fertilizing, watering and tending all worthwhile!
Am still waiting for multiple hummers. I have great dark red mandevilla on my upper deck to attract passerby hummers, but so far, no luck. Also have hummer plants on 3 sides of my house now, so one single hummer can dominate and chase younger hummers away as they have in past years.
There is still time. Don't think the migrators have started to pass through yet. They tend to be heavy feeders, and so far it's not happening yet. Last year had a heavy feeder at the end of August, but so far he has not re-appeared. Hope he survived the migration. Time will tell.
