Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 08/22/2014

Number: 12

Serving out approximately 2-4 quarts a day. My perception is that it was more towards 4 two weeks ago and down to 2-3+ today. Lots and lots of birds, sometimes feeding 12 or more at a time on two feeders, one triple decker with holes for about 18-24 and one single feeder with eight holes for eight birds. Lots of frantic activity and conflicts. Yesterday while changing food I chose to hesitate for a while next to the feeders to make some observations. I was 6 to 18 inches from the feeders, so right up there to study colors and shapes. I have lots and lots of juveniles in various stages of filling in their colors. Some with stripes on the neck, or a dark spot under the neck, lots of irregularity in the color...needless to say lots of green but with patches of gray still mixed in with green. Some are beginning to form the white ring of the male around the neck visible by an outline. Have mature males and mature females. Lots of everything. This 12 or more at a time goes on all day from sun up to sun down...eating lots of homemade sugar water food. busy busy busy!
