Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/25/2014

Number: 3

Today we saw a juvie male ruby-throat & it's the 1st time I've been able to identify a juvie as male or female! He had several reddish throat feathers on the left & middle of his little throat. Unfortunately, our resident male, Mr. Speedy, has left us. Our last sighting of him was this past Saturday, 8/23 slurping homemade nectar from our feeders. He really had gotten quite chubby, so we knew the past couple of weeks that any day would be his last here. I watched for him to show up all day yesterday & today, but no dice. He was our 1st hummer of the season on 4/25/14, so he was here just shy of 4 months. We'll surely miss the little guy! Safe travels, Mr. Speedy! Our 1st females arrived this past Spring one week after Mr. Speedy, but we sure hope that doesn't mean they'll leave us one week after his departure.....last Fall they left us Sept. 9. We're still enjoying these little cuties! Their dive-bombing each other cracks us up!
