Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/23/2014

Number: 40

Members of the Washington Butterfly Association tagged just over 40 wild monarchs at a site near Vantage. This is the first time that such an event has been held in Washington but hopefully the beginning of a tradition.

Monarch populations in the Pacific Northwest are larger this year than last year: The population at Vantage is at least 3-4 times greater than in 2013 and reports of monarch occurrence in WA this summer suggests greater abundance regionally as well. Hopefully this will translate into larger overwintering populations along the California coast.
