We tagged 33 wild monarchs in less than three hours the past two days (8/23-24). Last year from Aug 23-25, we tagged twenty in 12 hours. The last few years we've only ordered fifty tags due to low population predictions, but this year we could have used 100. I teach second grade and always keep enough tags for my students to tag the butterflies that hatch in our classroom from larva I bring in so we have 17 tags yet to use. I agree with Don Davis that the migration may be later and longer this year. Several fields that always hold a monarch or two were bare the past two days. Some garden plants that are normally done blossoming are still fresh and brightly colored.
