I believe this caterpillar is headed for it's next stage the chrysalis . I observed it moving off the milkweed on a zinnia plant. It was interesting to watch it try to reach that zinnia leaf they crawl to the edge of the milkweed and grab it with their mouth. Than they move pretty quickly once they are off the milkweed.
