It looks like my two adult males may have moved on today. They were present this morning but at 7 pm I have yet to see them this evening. In the meanwhile two juvenile males have taken their places guarding feeders. The two adult males were limiting themselves to protecting one feeder each ( I have 4 up), but the juvenile males are trying to protect all the feeders. The two juvenile males are distinguished by the shape and size of the ruby throat feathers that have erupted in the last week. There is a 3rd juvenile or female who is guarding one feeder periodically--it does not have any ruby feathers showing but the immature males with ruby feathers are letting it feed...or when they try to chase it are often chased off themselves.
The hummers are also enjoying the althea bush--besides nectaring they are probing the seed head clusters, presumably for bugs. I also have at least one adult female (larger and at this point plumper than the juveniles) and one probable juvenile female.
