Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/31/2014

Number: 40

A beautiful female Monarch butterfly came to our milkweed. I just saw it eating nectar, never laying eggs. The grass was brown, no wild flowers in the fields, and my husband and I thought the butterfly was just migrating. Days later, while weeding my garden, I collected 82 caterpillars at different instars in 2 days! From 8/30/14 to 8/31/14, during approx 24-36hrs, 40 Monarch butterflies emerged from their chrysalis and we released them 8/31 pm. We still got 32 more chrysalis in our 3 cages. (Ten of the caterpilllars were infected with the white stringy stuff and we destroyed them.)
