Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/31/2014

Number: 2

Two rufous females were at the feeder this day, the last I have seen calliope or rufous at my feeders in this south-central BC location this summer. Temps are still warm (25 C/80+F) during daytime, but nights are cooler, possibly indicating a migration cue. Interesting to speculate whether hummers use central or coastal flyways to move south. No males of calliope or rufous here since early Aug. Overall, a busy feeder season, mostly for calliopes, from late April to end of July. One has to question the value of such a long migration for such a short stay at "home".
