Small roost (16 or 17) on a tree to the west of a field of goldenrod. Six more on the other side of the road nearby. Field is large so there could have been several small roosts. Numbers of monarchs are much less now; today's northern winds moved many on their way. I suspect those I saw tonight were mostly migrating from further north of here. Southerly winds tomorrow and Sunday could create higher numbers as low flyers find good goldenrod areas. Farmers have almost all cut their alfalfa before it blossoms. Very cold tonight (predicted 50 or lower) and so the monarchs roosted early and certainly. No fooling around when the real cold comes..........
