While collecting milkweed in a friend's backyard meadow to feed caterpillars I'm raising, we found a 5th instar caterpillar moving around on the ground on some plantain about 5 feet off a milkweed plant he had been on. We could see some frass he left behind. Collected him to raise to a butterfly & tag for MonarchWatch.org.
