Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/05/2014

Number: 5

5 Ruby Throats, juveniles and females, feeding heavily. Hummingbird circus is still swinging. I am seeing more migrants...they come in circling, usually feeding on the althea (rose of sharon) bush, black and blue salvia, and petunias in hanging baskets before checking out the feeders (I still have 4 feeders out.) They had been checking out the walker's low nepeta (cat mint)but it is largely done for the year. They are observing the feeders, circling and hovering, before approaching to feed. Sometimes they veer off and return to the flowering plants. My regulars just come straight to the feeders.

Today is hot--already 87 F at noon, and 65% humidity--forecast is 94F this afternoon before storms in the evening. It is sunny, with a slight breeze.

Birds consumed 16 oz. of nectar yesterday. Assuming each bird eats 0.5 oz (see Bird Watchers Digest site) then I had 32 hummers yesterday. I saw 6 at once yesterday.
