Thought I would share this unusual find.I went to check the waystation at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo.
The main gardens milkweed had been totally stripped by the monarch, they moved over 20 caterpillars (mostly 4th & 5th instars) to another milkweed bed.
There was still a female present laying eggs, she was a bit worn. I was able to walk up to her & noticed she was having trouble laying. I picked her up by hand off a flower & on closer inspection, she appeared egg bound. She had several eggs stuck on her vent. (not sure of proper term)
I was very gentle & squeezed her vent & ended up with a cluster of eggs on my finger. It must be 6 or more eggs.
I have brought them home to raise.
