Hundreds of monarchs emerged out of the wooded peninsula just north of my cottage on Blind Sodus Bay, Lake Ontario this evening. They flew primarily solo and in pairs following the shoreline from north to south along the lake.
The monarchs were not settling near here, they were on the move down the shoreline after emerging out of the wooded area just north of my cottage which is located on a peninsula that separates Blind Sodus Bay from Lake Ontario.
From my vantage point I cannot tell how far they travelled down the shoreline as they were soon out of sight about 1/2 mile away.
This sighting occurred at 7:30 pm, just before the sunset, and the wind was very calm. After the sun set, I did not see another monarch. As far as I know there was no unusual stimulus north of me that would cause the monarchs to move.
Monarchs have been flying south past my place for the past two weeks or so at random intervals throughout the day and always one at a time. This evening's sighting was different in the increased quantity and frequency of their appearance.
