Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/04/2014

Number: 100

Observed approximately 100 monarchs resting and flying around the east side of a small group of oaks and and brush. Cool overcast morning, about 10:30 am Sept 5th. I was at Crow-Hassan Park Reserve which has a restored prairie. Lots of liatris and goldenrod blooming.

There were monarchs in the oaks above these bushes, again camera wasn't able to get a shot where they would have shown up It was a cool morning I assumed they had roosted here there were so many and hadn't gotten warm enough to move on. This was at 10:30 am, I was back out there in the evening it was warmer. There were none where I saw them in am, but saw several trees where they were high up in the branches of oaks. Fewer than 10 per tree.

Editor's note: We've dated the roost for the night before when the roost was formed.
