Have had a summer full of almost all females and juveniles in my garden (haven't seen a red throat for months), swarming, playing and tussling over my five feeders. On 9/7, one of the females came to my kitchen window to say "good-bye" to me. This has happened in years past, so I know not to question my sanity. Sure enough, my crew seems to have departed. Feeders aren't emptying as before and I'm not seeing my little "swarm". Their departure is usually timed to correspond with the end of my blooms of Lobelia cardinalis, so I knew we were getting close. Although I still have some red flowers in the garden, they are also on their last legs. This has been my best year ever for numbers and I'll really miss these little guys and their aerial antics. You all south of us, take care of them when you see them!
