Greetings Again from Virginia's Eastern Shore!
I observed 4 monarchs in my front yard flower bed. They were nectaring on zinnia and Brazilian Verbena. One female was laying eggs on both the butterfly weed and swamp milkweed! She was flitting rapidly from one plant to the other! I had cut the butterfly weed all the way back to the ground about 3 weeks ago as it was pretty old and was covered with aphids. All new growth came back right away, and is full of fresh new leaves and new buds about to open! Also, I released 9 new butterflies that I raised from eggs, 1 male and 8 females! The future continues to look so much better for the monarchs this season here on the Shore! I also had cut my common milkweed back all the way that freely grows in my back yard. Have now gotten several eggs from the brand new growth that has rapidly come back...new plants range from 2 inches tall to 12 inches! These eggs that result in new butterflies will be late bloomers here...but I will send them on their way when they do! Yay!
