Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/07/2014

Number: 175

The monarchs were roosting. They were in all the trees lining the Nature Center driveway and many were high up. I didn't look at every tree but they were in at least 10 trees. I'd see one open manarch and then look and see a bunch of closed ones around it. Usually clusters of 5-10 monarchs. When the early morning light would hit the branch they'd flex their wings and take flight. Amazing. We estimated 100-200 but I bet if we looked at all the trees and actually counted there were more.

Last year we saw a total of TWO monarch caterpillars at the nature center all summer. This year they were present in great numbers. All the summer campers even got to see a female ovi-positing.
