Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/11/2014

Number: 3

RT Hummers brightened what otherwise is a sad day for our nation. I had 3 at once at my 4 feeders today (yesterday also had 3). At least 2 were juvenile males -- last was a juvenile but could not determine likely sex. Juvenile males have a few ruby feathers. Mostly sunny, 87 F, light breeze, humidity at 61%. Hummers ate 4 oz. today (same amount was eaten yesterday). Big temperature change tomorrow--forecast is 75 F high.Highs are forecast to be low to mid 70s for next 7 days with lows in mid 60s to high 50s.

Today one of the juvenile males gave a titmouse a big surprise. The titmouse flew toward the largest of my 4 feeders when the hummer came up behind suddenly and grabbed its tail. The hummer hung on for dear life as the titmouse bobbed and wove as it flew toward the roof. The hummer let go as the titmouse reached the gutter (a good thing since the titmouse hadn't managed to fly high enough up to that point to avoid hitting it) It gained just enough altitude to clear the gutter and land on the roof. It looked thoroughly shocked about what had happened to it. Hummers have moxie! Wish I could have gotten a picture.
