It's been a banner year for hummers here in my location. Food supplies were plentiful and it appears there was lots of young hummers born. I have had more hummers throughout the summer this year than any of the last seventeen years.
Today marked a hum-dinger of a hummer day I never would have expected. I had a verified count of 26 female and juvenile hummers around my patio feeders. 7 alone on the 28oz feeder, 6 more on another feeder, 4 fighting for a drink from a small perchless feeder, three on another feeder, 3 more perched in a small tree waiting a turn at a feeder and one sitting on the patio swing back rest. I've never had more that 15 verified before nor more than four at any one time on a feeder. So I was extremely pleased! Sky's were over cast with pretty much solid cloud cover. Temperatures reached a high of 63 degrees, approximately 5 mph wind gusts and no precipitation. Expected high temperatures are to continue in the mid to low 60's with mid 40's as the lows for the next 5 days. There is a 20%-30% chance of precipitation all five days. many of the sighted hummers are starting to show their plumpness and I'm still seeing several very small juveniles as well. Time will tell how long they will stay this year, my guess, not near as late as last year. Now, time to go fill up the feeders again and see what tomorrow brings.
