I observed a male monarch in my garden from 4:00 to 4:30 pm. One of his wings was somewhat tattered, and his coloring was not as bright as others I have seen. There are many gulf fritillaries in my garden also, and I noticed that at times they appear to chase away the monarch when he tried to light on zinnias. Also, a couple of times, it appeared that the monarch and a gulf fritillary were chasing each other, as they flew in upward spirals and then up into the sky. When no other butterflies were around, the monarch enjoyed drinking nectar from my tropical milkweed and bright orange zinnias.
