There is a prairie next to the Ney Environmental Learning Center 1 mile east of Henderson MN. For three nights in a row, 100+ monarchs roosted in the walnut trees near the prairie....a small number compared to the sightings of past years... 3rd, 4th and 5th of September. However, on the 7th and 9th of September, H U G E numbers (close to a thousand) nectared on a red clover field (sunny afternoons, temp near 70 degrees) taking our collective breaths away. Only a video camera would have encompassed the sight. (Oh, to have observed THAT roost!!!!!)
In autumn 2012 and 2013, the number of Monarchs passing through our area was pathetic.
