Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/16/2014

Number: 1

I tried to release the male Monarch (my son found it yesterday). Around 4:15pm I took the butterfly outside and put him on some State Fair Zinnias I have that are blooming. He didn't seem interested in nectaring, and I wasn't sure he could fly. He clung to the flower petals, stayed motionless, and did not attempt to fly. It was 64 degrees and sunny. Around 4:30pm he was still clinging to the same flower. I took him out in the front yard and put him on our Blue Mist shrub, which was blooming. He didn't nectar there either, but he did take off flying and I watched him for several minutes as he glided with the air currents. He finally landed in the top of our oak tree in the back yard. Full speed ahead to Mexico, little one!
