Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/16/2014

Number: 5

High 78 F, breezy around 20mph until dusk (white caps showing on Potomac all day with winds blowing from NW toward SE), low was 69 F, mostly cloudy all day, humidity dropping all day to 46% at dusk. Temps were in the low to mid 50s just north of here last night. Hummers consumed 8 oz. of food (up from 3 oz yesterday).

Big uptick in RT hummingbird numbers today--feeders almost continually occupied with at least one bird all day long. Only two obviously adult females seen, majority of the birds were juveniles. Some of the birds were apparently coming in exhausted. They fed heavily and then sat on the feeders for 15 minutes and fed again...2 stayed for about 45 min. total.

Due to higher numbers of birds present they exhibited some conflict today. Two hummers dueled for several minutes around the feeders. One hummer forced the other bird down all the way to the ground before disengaging briefly. They continued sparring around the althea bush and feeders until one finally gave up and moved to the backyard feeder.
