Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/17/2014

Number: 1500

YESTERDAYS NUMBERS UNDERESTIMATE HOW many adults are nectaring in the 100 acres (minus 30 turned under already) of Red Clover at this location. Today I counted and estimated after a more thorough inspection from the concession roads with binoculars. In the west half of the fields bisected by Mersea Rd 12 (N-S) driving along Mersea Rd C (east of Point Pelee Drive) I counted over 700 monarchs. So it is easy to estimate at least 1500 butterflies feeding on Red Clover in both fields. The farmer property owner estimates that he saw over 5000 Monarchs today in the field he's plowing, and at least that many in the untouched field.
Many of the butterflies are actually roosting in these fields overnight, even though some are flying to nearby trees.
Another property on the Bevel Line had 70 Monarchs on Red Clover in 150 ft x 150 ft feet approx.
